Take action

Māui and Hector’s dolphins need stronger protection. You can take action to help!

Too many Hector’s dolphins are being killed by the fishing industry. There may be many more deaths that aren’t reported.

Both central and regional governments can and must to more to protect Māui and Hector’s dolphins.

Central Government must protect Māui and Hector’s throughout their range - out to 100m deep or 20nm.

Regional Councils must support that protection from fishing and ensure the dolphins are safe from other threats too. This involves strong Regional Coastal Plans to protect regional biodiversity from fishing related effects. This is especially important in Canterbury coastal waters where a high concentration of Hector’s are being killed.

Protect Hector’s from the fishing industry

No dolphin should be drowned in a fishing net. Yet the fishing industry is wiping out Māui and Hector’s dolphins.

Call on the Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to protect Hector’s from the fishing industry.

ECan: Protect Hector’s Dolphins through your Regional Plan

Around 50 Hector’s can be killed each year by the fishing industry according to Fisheries Related Mortality Limits. Current rules say up to 20 can be killed in Canterbury alone, every year. That’s unacceptable. WE CAN protect Hector’s. Come on ECan, protect Hector’s now. Sign the petition calling on ECan to protect Hector’s through its Regional Coastal Plan review.
